Ahhh tequila! One of the world’s most distinctive and unique beverages and a symbol of our querido Mexico. Mention the word tequila in Cancun or anywhere else on the planet and images of limes, shot glasses and fiesta will immediately spring to mind. It’s true, try it! With a long history of culture, tradition and flavor, tequila is a vital part of the Mexican identity.

So what IS tequila?

Tequila is a spirit that comes from the blue agave, the “heart” of the agave plant is peeled, roasted, and crushed to release the sweet juices to be fermented and distilled. Like champagne, the word “tequila” can only be applied to products from the geographical region around the city of (you guessed it), Tequila, in the state of Jalisco on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

Where to buy tequila in Cancun?

There are four categories of tequila, “blanco”, “reposado”, “añejo” and “extra añejo”. “Blanco” or “white” is also referred to as “silver” and is the youngest of the bunch, generally aged about two months and is clear of color. “Reposado” is aged between 2 and 12 months and has a rich golden color. “Añejo” is a dark whisky color and is aged between one and three years. “Extra añejo” is the darkest and oldest, aged for more than three years in the casks.

Where to enjoy or buy tequila in Cancun?

  • Before going on your Chichen Itza Plus or Tulum + Coba + Cenote tour we encourage you to explore Plaza La Fiesta to discover a wide variety of tequilas, bring home (or to the tour) something delicious!
  • For a great night out, visit Señor Frogs or Coco Bongo and have the bartender set you up with all their delicious tequila cocktails.
  • La Destileria Restaurant and La Europea liquor store in the hotel zone are great options for your continuing tequila education! Developing an appreciation for this spirit is easy and fun, be sure to look for tastings in Cancun with experienced professionals to guide you to YOUR tequila style.
  • Enjoy a slow cruise on a traditional ¨trajinera¨at Xoximilco with authentic Mexican culinary treats alongside your palomas.
  • Before flying back home and with enough time, try Chedraui Selecto in the Hotel Zone or Walmart in downtown Cancun. Once at the airport you can visit one of the many duty free shops there (the prices may be higher than at the local supermarkets). Remember, if you are purchasing tequila to bring back home, you can bring one liter per adult duty free, anything above this limit is subject to duty and import taxes at the discretion of the customs officer.

How to do a tequila shot

Where to buy tequila in Cancun?

The tequila shot is a ritual, not just a drink! Generally speaking this is a “party game” and you are not going to use your finest tequilas. Lick the back of your hand and sprinkle it with salt, lick the salt, drink the shot and then suck on a lime. Repeat.

Sipping tequila in Cancun and the art of the Sangrita

Where to buy tequila in Cancun?

“Sangrita” means “little blood” and is the typical accompaniment to a good sipping tequila. This spicy/citrussy/tomato concoction accentuates the flavors of the tequila and is the traditional way to enjoy the beverage. Sangrita is served in a shot glass alongside the tequila, take a small sip of tequila, a small sip of sangrita, and do not rush the magic! There are endless variations of sangrita recipes, here is just one courtesy, play with the ingredients to find your perfect match.

  • 2 oz Tabasco Sauce or Cholula Hot Sauce
  • 2 oz Lime juice
  • 6 to 8 oz Orange juice
  • 6 to 8 oz Grapefruit juice
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Freshly ground black pepper
  • 15 oz Tomato juice
  • 1 Jalapeño pepper, halved (with seeds)

Add all the ingredients to a pitcher and stir until the salt dissolves. Let stand for 15 to 30 minutes and then remove and discard the jalapeño. (The longer the jalapeño infuses, the spicier the Sangrita will be.) Store in the refrigerator.

Tequila Cocktails

Where to buy tequila in Cancun?

Tequila is not only great to shoot or sip on its own but is a fabulous spirit for making delicious cocktails. The traditional margarita is a simple mix of tequila, triple sec and lime or lemon juice, served over ice or frozen with or without salt on the rim of the glass. A “paloma” is a super refreshing mix of tequila and grapefruit flavored soft drinks. Tequila Sunrise is so good, the Eagles wrote a song about it, a fruity and sweet blend of tequila, orange juice and grenadine. The options are endless, ask your local bartender for their tequila house specialty, you’ll be delighted by the surprises.

However you choose to imbibe, we encourage you to do so in moderation and of course, no drinking and driving! (Check out our blog on transportation in Cancun so you don’t have to get behind the wheel).
